Adriatica sails in the Gulf of Tigullio and enters Santa Margherita Ligure harbour. The radio to channel to communicate with the marina is 11. Patrizio and the crew are welcomed by Commander Gino, who also acts as chief mooring man, as well as ... person responsible for everything!
Gino lists all the services available in the harbour, which has 36 boat places, from 10 to 55/60 metres, without draught problems (the minimum is 5 metres at the quay!). Here yachters find water, electricity, toilet services, diesel, and diversified refuse containers. There is also a plan for a system of used oil collection and there will be soon a system for bilge collection from boats, directly connected to the sewer.
Patrizio is very much struck by the genuineness of the place, at the risk of seeming a bit nostalgic and an inverted snob he admits he prefers the quay of Santa Margherita to many marinas that are new but a bit anonymous and too chic! Its strength is that it is a natural harbour, not a built one. And then there is everything around the town: Santa Margherita Ligure! Very beautiful and equipped with everything: laundry, a little bar for breakfast, an exceptional bakery for pizza bread ... This is the information that should be contained in a portolan!
Speaking of mooring prices they start from 64 Euros a night for a 12-metre boat, 120 Euros for a 20-metre boat, 160 Euros for a 25-metre boat, up to 290 Euros a night for a 38-metre boat. Prompt intervention by Gino is included!
The beach of dogs
At Santa Margherita Ligure Patrizio tells us about a fantastic idea: Bau Bau Beach, a free beach for dogs. It may seem banal, but if you have a dog where do you go to the beach? At Santa Margherita they have found a solution.
The beach for dogs is used by a lot of people, considering that – as a lady reminds us during the visit – dogs aren’t wanted anywhere, even if they small. Here, instead, his too – very small – can swim and has a clean and equipped space available.
Patrizio also meets Giovanni with his faithful four-legged companion. The boy says he habitually uses the beach and that he has never even tried to take his dog to another beach, confirming the problems that owners have. By contrast, here during the day the space is crowded, a sort of meeting place for dogs and owners.
Bau Bau Beach is an ingenious idea. Besides, what is a holiday place for, if not to create relationships? Certainly, here we are talking about rather special relationships, between dog owners, dogs, the sea and their habits.
